Foreign nationals who wish to study in Canada for a period longer than six months need a study permit. For the duration of the studies, an accompanying spouse or common-law partner may be able to obtain an open work permit (OWP), and minor children will be able to study at Canadian elementary and secondary schools.
A study permit is a document that IRCC issues to foreign nationals allowing them to study in Canada. It is not a visa. A foreign national thus also need a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA), where applicable, to enter Canada.
The processing time of a Study permit is typically 3 to 4 months from the date IRCC receives the complete application documents, but may vary depending on the IRCC, immigration policy changes, backlogged files, etc.
Legal residents of certain countries may be applicable for applying Student Direct Stream to obtain a study permit in a shorter estimated time. For more details, please contact Kaizen professional consultants. |
